Re: creating an autobiographical comic
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 1:44 PMWell Mer, there's a lot of people out there who think the autobiographical "confessional" comic genre (ostensibly started by Crumb) has run its course... but if you're pretty well convinced that you got some fresh idea, by all means run with it. As far as it being factually accurate, I have two words: FUCK THAT! It's like the recollection of a dream; throughout the course of the day, all but the most lucid details slip away like sand through your fingers. Improvise. Be creative with filling in the blanks that you don't remember. Any non-fiction author worth his/her salt will tell you that memory in itself is a construct, and that's what makes the genre fun. There's never a clear line between fact and fiction...
A good drawing exercise--if you're worried about time constraints--is to get one of those little kitchen timers and give yourself one minute to draw the outline of each panel. Don't concentrate on details, shading, just try to get the basic forms and composition laid out. If you have a lightbox, you can use the original outlines you like as reference for the finished product.

Re: creating an autobiographical comic
Thu, August 25, 2005 - 8:24 AMI agree that the autobiographical comic has been done and over done...but there is always room for something different and imaginative. For the things you can't remember, don't be afraid to be a bit dreamy or supernatural

Re: creating an autobiographical comic
Sun, June 18, 2006 - 12:03 PMIf you cant really remember the specifics you can go back and ask people in your family and circle of friends who will. But the real question is not if these were important events to you but if they will be engaging to the reader. -

Re: creating an autobiographical comic
Thu, June 22, 2006 - 7:23 PMthats the thing about it you may have to "stop living" for a while to do the dang thing
..that's really the hard part and might take years before something so personal as an autobiographical narrative can be completed.
or just draw real fast every day a few panels of what happend and even if its just thumbnails youll have the record down.

Re: creating an autobiographical comic
Sat, July 1, 2006 - 11:47 AMI am also creating an autobiographical comic. If you find that some things are slipping away, you shouldn't worry about it too much...since you will remember the most important details. Also, the things that you are experiencing right now might find a way to 'dovetail' into the other experiences that you want to document.
